Hallo an alle,

nachdem wir ("die Englaender") so viel Spass bei den diesjaehrigen DFM(dM) hatten, haben wir uns ueberlegt, die Idee zu kopieren und im September ein englisches Aequivalent auf die Beine zu stellen. Da wir so freundlich von euch empfangen wurden (und ueberhaupt teilnehmen durften), moechten wir uns revanchieren und euch auch einladen.

Anbei die offizielle Einladungsmail an die anderen Englischen Unis mit weiteren Infos. Bitte mailt an mathsFootballChampionships@googlemail.co.uk, wenn ihr generelles Interesse oder ihr noch weitere Fragen habt. Falls ihr es dieses Jahr nicht schaffen solltet, aber naechstes Jahr teilnehmen wollen wuerdet, so lasst uns das auch wissen.

The idea comes from a trip we, the University of Bath Maths Dept Postgrad&Staff football team, made to the very successful German Inter-University Maths Football Tournament at the end of June (we were invited as a result of one of our department playing in the tournament whilst studying in Germany).

We arrived at the site of the tournament on Friday night and set up our tents (on-site camping was available) and we had a bbq with music and a few drinks with the other teams.

On the Saturday morning the tournament started and the teams ranged hugely from those taking the football seriously to those who couldn't play much but had come along to have a good time with other maths postgrad students. There were male and female teams as well as supporters, both male and female, just there to enjoy the event.

There was a party on

the Saturday night, followed by the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday morning. We left Sunday afternoon after the final presentations.

The tournament was a huge success and was enjoyed by everyone who took part and it led us to consider setting up a similar tournament in Bath for British Postgrad Maths Departments. If there was sufficient interest, we would look to set up the tournament for summer 2009, but to guage interest, as well as give us an idea of how to run such an event, we were considering trying to host a smaller version of such a tournament later this summer, perhaps in early September before undergrads return to campus. We will be running this as a social event, trying to get mathematicians together and as such any standard of player is welcome as well as supporters.

At this stage, the plan is in its infancy and all we are looking for is interest in the idea, to see whether it is worth us going ahead. So please distribute this email amongst your department and reply telling us whether you think you would be interested in sending a team. As there is not long to organise, we may not run a weekend long tournament; maybe just a day of football and activities, but that depends largely on the responses that we get. We are likely to try and organise the tournament as a 6-a-side on the astroturf at the University of Bath. Once we have heard from enough universities, we will make a decision and keep you informed.
